There are many rules that shoppers of all kinds should adhere to when purchasing items, but here are a few rules that bargain shoppers everywhere should stick to when searching for the best value for money.
1. I hate to use cliches, but the early bird catches the worm is extremely relevant when bargain shopping. If you go shopping early in the morning you won't be forced to wait in long queues and you'll get the best choice of items available before they're snapped up by other eager shoppers. Of course certain store sales, such as the Next sale, can attract early morning queues even before the store opens, but if you're really eager to pick up a particular bargain it's always best to get in there as early as possible.
2. Do your research. Sales, particularly on the high street, can occur at least four times a year, with some stores operating sale rails all year round. If you're in search of a specific item then be sure to know the quickest way to get it when it goes on sale. Sales assistants are often very helpful and will readily supply information on the next sale dates (they're just as eager as us to secure a deal) so don't be afraid to ask. Regularly check store websites and be sure to sign on to receive email newsletters if the service is available.
3. Don't dilly dally. I have an aunt who can scan a shop in under a minute before knowing if there's anything she wants to buy in the store. This is an excellent trait to have when bargain shopping as it can save valuable time. Learn how to quickly survey a store's merchandise to avoid missing out on a bargain. To do this you must know your style and shape very well. Gok wan's Channel 4 website shows women how to dress for their shape and is definitely worth a look if you're unsure about what suits you.
4. Go it alone. If you're serious about picking up a bargain then definitely shop alone. Friends and family often have similar tastes; I have been in situations where a shopping companion also wants to buy the same item - it's an ethical nightmare!! I know a lot of women don't enjoy shopping alone as they can be unsure if an item suits them. A useful way to get around this is to take pictures on your phone of the outfit (when in the fitting room of course) using the reflection in the mirror. Your loved ones will respond in seconds with their views.
5. Finally, and this is the cardinal rule for all shoppers, never buy anything just because it's cheap or is on sale. To use another aunt as an example, her wardrobe is bulging with items she bought in sales but never wore. If you are unsure, try it on and take a picture (as advised above) or ask yourself what would you wear it with, i've found this simple question very helpful in avoiding waste.
